The Three Parts to Original Medicare
Part A
Hospital
Part B
Medical
Part D
Prescription Drugs
There are three basic parts of Original Medicare:
Part A is covers all of your major hospital expenses along with skilled nursing and other expenses. You are entitled to Part A if you are 65 or older and paid taxes for 40 quarters.
Part B covers all of your medical expenses such as your primary care and specialist visits. It also covers outpatient surgeries, radiology, and other medical expenses that are incurred outside of the hospital. You must sign up for Part B upon turning 65 to avoid a penalty unless you have creditable coverage available to you through an employer.
Part D covers your prescription drugs you get at the pharmacy. You must sign up for Part D upon turning 65 to avoid a penalty unless you have creditable coverage available to you through an employer.
